The inspiration behind: Volcanic Vanuatu pouch art.

In our latest collaboration with Dave Plant, also known as D'visionart, we’ve set out to capture the essence of Vanuatu, a stunning and mysterious region in the South Pacific. Through his vibrant and intricate designs, Dave has beautifully depicted Volcanic Vanuatu, a place where the raw power of nature meets the rich traditions of its indigenous culture. This artwork brings to life the incredible stories of Vanuatu, reflecting the soul of the land and the people behind our ceremonial cacao.

Vanuatu: The Land of Fire and Tradition

Our cacao is sourced from Malekula Island, one of the many islands that make up Vanuatu. Situated in a part of the South Pacific known as the "Red Triangle," Vanuatu is renowned for its volcanic activity. The landscape is breathtaking, with active volcanoes, dense jungles, and crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life. You’ll find flying foxes (fruit bats) soaring through the sky, sharks navigating the waters and the rare Lau banded iguana basking in the sunlight.

Malekula Island, like much of Vanuatu, pulses with geothermal energy and natural beauty. There’s a deep connection between the environment and the local culture, a bond that defines the unique spirit of this region.

The Indigenous Spirit and the Origins of Bungee Jumping

Vanuatu is not only known for its breathtaking scenery but also for its vibrant indigenous culture. A fascinating tradition that originated here is land diving, the precursor to modern-day bungee jumping. On Malekula Island, the locals build towering wooden structures, and men dive from the top with vines tied around their ankles, aiming to come as close to the ground as possible. This daring ritual is a demonstration of bravery, strength, and a profound connection to the land. It symbolises renewal and a leap of faith, linking the divers with the spirits of their ancestors and the earth.

Capturing the Essence of Vanuatu in Art

When creating the artwork for our Volcanic Vanuatu cacao pouch, we aimed to encapsulate the wild and untamed essence of this extraordinary place. D'visionart’s design includes elements inspired by Vanuatu’s dynamic landscape and rich traditions. Fiery motifs symbolise the active volcanoes, while intricate patterns reflect the indigenous art and the land diving ritual. Each detail is a tribute to Vanuatu’s culture and natural environment.

The design embodies the essence of a place where the land breathes fire, jungles echo with the sounds of wildlife, and traditions remain strong. The mask featured in the design represents the spirit of the island, serving as a bridge between past and present—a celebration of Malekula Island’s enduring cultural legacy.
